Portrait of Evgeny Maximov in his studio

The Artist

Evgeny Maximov

Evgeny Maximov paints in oil with the palette knife alone — no brushes. Every petal and ridge of pigment is laid down in thick, deliberate strokes that catch the light and give his work a real, sculptural presence.

His subjects are the flowers he paints at intimate, larger-than-life scale — irises, peonies, magnolias, gladiolus — and the landscapes of his adopted Portugal. Colour is the language: deep violets, crimson hearts, quiet creams, set against shadowed grounds so the bloom seems lit from within.

He is currently at work on Ancient Song, a collection of ten macro flower paintings. Each canvas conceals an ancient Hebrew word for worship, folded into the petals and stems.

He has been painting in Portugal since 2005, with more than 70 paintings sold.

Works are held in private collections internationally. Commissions and studio visits are welcome by appointment.
